It’s being hailed as the best match of the year — and for good reason.

Luke Littler and Gerwyn Price delivered a thrilling spectacle on Friday night as they battled for a place in the semi-finals. After the match, cameras captured Littler bursting into laughter — and now, unseen footage shows exactly why.

Both players came into the tournament in excellent form, making it all the more unfortunate that only one of them could advance to the final four. Given their performances throughout the event, it wouldn’t have been out of place to see them facing each other in the final instead.

The contest certainly lived up to expectations. Fans inside the venue were on their feet, while viewers at home were glued to their screens. In the end, it was Luke Littler who emerged victorious, setting up a semi-final clash with Jonny Clayton.

Before that, however, Danny Noppert and Luke Humphries will face off for the other semi-final spot. “The Freeze” has impressed throughout the tournament with clinical finishing at crucial moments, having already knocked out Jermaine Wattimena, Stephen Bunting, and Gary Anderson.

Noppert remains in contention to succeed last year’s champion, Mike De Decker, who has already been eliminated from this year’s tournament after losing to Littler in the second round.

The format changes significantly for the semi-finals, which will be played as a best-of-nine-sets contest, while the final will be best-of-eleven. That’s a major shift from the format players are used to throughout the rest of the year. Unlike most other tournaments, this event requires players to start each leg with a double, and the set play format is something only seen elsewhere at the PDC World Championship.
