Daryl Gurney played at the Dutch Darts Championship last weekend where he had this match with Ricardo Pietreczko. In the 7th leg something strange happened as the player from Northern-Ireland managed to win a leg without throwing 501 points in total.
Interesting one this, Gurney hits T20, S14 and then S16 hitting 90 which Kirk calls and therefore leaves him with 34
On his next throw he is then told he requires 25 which he checks out 🤔
Counts for nothing though as he ended up losing 😂 pic.twitter.com/60vq6yAKIt

Of course, this is not supposed to happen at all, and the chances of it occurring are extremely small—especially at a professional tournament where large sums of money are involved through betting companies. A referee and two scorers ensure that everything on stage runs smoothly and according to the rules.
Yet this mistake slipped through unnoticed. Even Daryl Gurney didn’t seem to realize it, which is perhaps the most remarkable part. As a player, you’re always aware of what you have left, and for a professional like SuperChin, that should certainly be the case.

However, there doesn’t seem to be any foul play involved, as the score that incorrectly remained on the scoreboard would logically only put him at a disadvantage. Had he adjusted the score to what he actually had left, he could not only have finished with just one dart instead of two, but he would also have had a route to double 16—a more popular option than the adjacent double 8.
Unfortunately for Gurney, this “illegal leg” still couldn’t prevent his eventual elimination against the German. Pietreczko narrowly won 6-5, sending Gurney packing. He likely only found out after the match that something had gone wrong, as the footage from the Dutch Darts Championship stage shows no one noticing the error during play.
