Even the English commentators condemned it, and with that, the current world number one has badly shot himself in the foot. Nevertheless, he still finds himself in second place in the Premier League rankings, trailing Luke Littler by six points.

From fourth place—where qualification for the playoffs is uncertain—he moved up to a more comfortable third place after Thursday night.
He won’t have much time to recover, as the European Darts Trophy kicks off on Friday afternoon. Van Gerwen can make the trip to Göttingen, Germany, on Friday, as he is only set to play his first match on Saturday.
