Where Dutch television allows the freedom to speak your mind, even using an occasional swear word, this is considered completely unacceptable in England. Sky Sports found itself in a bit of a panic when Michael van Gerwen openly shared his blunt opinion, being rather straightforward in the process.
The English are eagerly anticipating a final between Michael van Gerwen and Luke Littler. However, Van Gerwen has made it clear that he couldn’t care less who his opponent will be. His sole focus is on winning his fourth world title, and as he bluntly put it, “he doesn’t give a damn” about who he needs to beat to achieve that.
It is expected that Van Gerwen might face a financial penalty for his remarks, but he’s unlikely to be bothered. After all, he has already secured £200,000 for reaching the final, and he aims to add another £300,000 to that sum by winning the title, bringing his total to half a million pounds. A fine would barely make a dent in his earnings.
Interestingly, he may have also earned some extra pocket money by winning a bet with an English journalist. The journalist claimed that Van Gerwen had said he wanted to surpass Barney’s five world titles, but the Dutchman immediately denied it and challenged the reporter to provide evidence.
Van Gerwen instructed the journalist to do his homework and prove he had ever made such a statement. If the journalist succeeds, Van Gerwen promised to hand over ÂŁ50. If not, the Dutchman would pocket ÂŁ5 himself.
