For the umpteenth time in his career, Michael van Gerwen caught a match announcer off guard by refusing to wait for the formal introduction to conclude. While still standing on stage, the Dutchman casually began his warm-up throws, effectively performing what looked like a knife-throwing act, much to the surprise of those nearby.
The announcer, visibly uneasy at the sudden start, nervously stepped aside to avoid the line of fire. Van Gerwen, clearly amused by the moment, appeared to relish the reaction—an illustration of both his confidence and his flair for showmanship.
Yet beyond the light-hearted incident, it proved to be a weekend filled with impressive performances for the three-time world champion. Supported enthusiastically by his daughter, who could be seen cheering him on from the crowd with a sign for her father, Van Gerwen delivered a series of high-quality matches.
He began with a solid 6–4 victory over Mickey Mansell, before edging past Daryl Gurney in a dramatic last-16 encounter, winning 6–5. The match was particularly notable, as the Northern Irishman recorded his highest-ever Euro Tour average of 109.73. Under immense pressure, Gurney also produced a 140 checkout to level the match at 5–5, earning the right to throw first in the match leg.
However, Van Gerwen responded in emphatic fashion. Opening the deciding leg with back-to-back 180s—and following up with a seventh dart that also landed in the treble 20—he seized immediate control. Despite narrowly missing treble 19 on his next visit, he closed out the match in just 12 darts, averaging an outstanding 108.65.
In the quarter-finals, Van Gerwen continued his strong run with a 6–4 victory over Ryan Joyce. His journey ultimately came to an end in the semi-finals, where he faced Luke Humphries. The Englishman proved too strong on the day, securing a convincing 7–2 win. Humphries would go on to cap off his dominant performance by defeating Jonny Clayton in the final to claim the title.
All in all, it was a weekend that showcased both Van Gerwen’s elite-level darts and his unmistakable personality—qualities that continue to make him one of the sport’s most compelling figures.
