We recently looked back at the Promi World Darts Championship, highlighting a remarkable moment involving Luke Humphries and Michael van Gerwen. However, there was another incident during the tournament that was arguably even more extraordinary.
What Gian van Veen’s doubles partner managed to do was, quite frankly, almost unbelievable—as clearly shown in the footage circulating from the event.
Moment 1:
His partner was none other than Cathy Hummels, a television presenter who had never held a dart before this tournament. Hummels, also known as the former wife of footballer Mats Hummels, entered the competition without any prior darts experience. Despite that, and with some guidance from Gian van Veen—the runner-up at the 2026 PDC World Championship—she managed to surprise both fans and professionals alike. Whether it was raw talent, beginner’s luck, or a combination of both, her performance raised more than a few eyebrows.
When she stepped up to throw for the leg, the commentator advised her to aim for the big numbers, noting that singles were sufficient to check out. Van Veen, however, was having none of it. He expressed full confidence that his partner could go straight for a double—and moments later, she did exactly that, producing one of the most talked-about throws of the tournament.
And that was not the end of it. In another memorable moment, Hummels once again astonished the audience and their opponents, including Nathan Aspinall and his partner, with another unexpected but successful throw.
Moment 2:
Despite these standout highlights, the fairy tale did not result in a title for Gian van Veen. He ultimately fell short of reaching the final, which was contested by Michael van Gerwen and Stephen Bunting, each accompanied by their own respective partners.
Nevertheless, the performance of Van Veen and his unlikely partner ensured that this edition of the Promi World Darts Championship will be remembered for quite some time.
